Can't Hear My Eyes: CALIFORNIAX

canthearmyeyesblog:

prepare for your earlobes to be sonically assaulted by CALIFORNIAX and their track ‘Sucker’. Bursting at the seems with a slick 90’s vibe and with it’s roots firmly planted in grunge and post-hardcore, the band take their cue from the likes of Iceage and Eagulls in bringing anthemic punk…

California X - Sucker

New jams from the woods-living heartthrobs who have brought you other horrendous acts such as VELD, SKVLT, AND VELOZ.

Kinda grungey. Kinda indie. Kinda really pretty. Cool guitar parts. I love this.

California X, Sucker (from the Sucker/Mummy Double A-Side)

Well I’ve gushed about my love of The Sounds Of Sweet Nothing family before…Au Palais, Halls, Gross Magic etc.  And California X is most certainly another sibling from this amazing label worth loving!  If you’ve wanted more indie pop/punk in your life since the stellar Cloud Nothings album “Attack On Memory” dropped the track “Sucker” is so for you!  There’s also this total Guided By Voices vibe on this eargasm that well is oh very appreciated!  Plain and simple I’m loving this one.  It’s 7 minutes in heaven.  Okay okay to be accurate it’s 6 minutes 43 seconds in heaven but who is counting ha!??! If you are smitten too you can purchase the Sucker/Mummy Double A-Side over at Bandcamp!

Sounding like they just woke up from a twenty-year bong induced coma is the Amherst bred band California X. Their scrappy new demo ‘Mummy’ is classic indie rock stripped back to it’s early 90s’ roots. Heavy guitars, fuzzy vocals, and reassuringly lethargic - it reignites our once popular urge to clothe ourselves in all manner of flannel. Keep an eye out for more from these guys via tastemaker label The Sound Of Sweet Nothing sometime soon.

“Mummy (Demo)” by California X // TBD - The Sounds of Sweet Nothing Records (2012)

It’s refreshing to hear something so stripped back and raw as this demo from Amherst, MA band, California X. They’ve recently signed with excellent up and coming label The Sounds of Sweet Nothing (Au Palais, Tashaki Miyaki) to release they’re debut single. In the meantime, you can check out their demo set at Bandcamp, which includes this indie rock throwback gem. Think of the years when the term “indie rock” meant something, and you’ll be getting close to what this sounds like. Definitely for fans of early Guided By Voices, early Built to Spill, and The Replacements

California X are three dudes from Amherst, MA - for us Non-Americans that’s roughly three hours outside of New York.

Amherst is also the playground of J Mascis from Dinosaur JR, which might explain why California X play some of the greatest “balls out” alternative rock we’ve heard for a long time, admittedly hidden (in true DIY fashion) behind lo-quality demo recordings.

Their demos make for a must listen for fans of Mudhoney, Dinosaur JR or their modern day equivalents such as Milk Music of JEFF The Brotherhood.

Stay tuned for more California X very soon…
